Almost all of us want to feel as fulfilled and confident as we can in our personal and professional lives, but more often than not, something seems to get in the way to stop us changing or moving forward in the way we’d like.

Coaching aims to help you identify achievable goals and address any potential hurdles that may prevent you from realising them. Personal development is a key area where coaching can help build your self-belief and confidence by working with your strengths to make the most of your potential.

It’s a simple, supportive process that looks at where you are now, where you want to be and the options open to you to get you there. It also allows you to develop effective strategies to help you overcome the obstacles that you feel may be getting in the way.

Coaching helps build self-awareness and develop emotional intelligence, both vital ingredients for you to successfully realise your full potential in life. Not everyone necessarily knows exactly what they want from life; they may just have a feeling that they are stuck with no real plans and sometimes, nothing to really look forward to in the months or years ahead. The first step your coach will probably help you take is to make an honest, current appraisal of yourself; looking at both your strengths and your weaknesses.

Whilst the focus will always be positive, it’s part of the process to look at the whole self and work out the key areas you wish to change and improve. Working in close partnership with your coach, it is then possible to be clearer about how you see yourself; the person you are now, and how you would like to be; in other words, the person you want to become. Your coach will help you develop a life-plan that will include a step by step programme to support your journey as you develop your talents and potential and get to fulfil your aspirations. You agree a workable timetable for each of the steps you have decided to take; the coach is there to give you the encouragement you need to maintain your motivation and as well as constructive feedback along the way. You both regularly assess progress and work together to find the right strategies to help you overcome any setbacks that may occur.

Most people agree that being able to talk frankly to a professional who is not a friend, relative or work colleague; gives them the opportunity to examine their lives truly objectively rather than receive advice from someone who, though wishing you well, will inevitably have their own take on what you should or shouldn’t be doing with your life. Your coach will only focus on your best interests and concern themselves with looking at as many positive options as possible to help you achieve your aims and help you enjoy the life you want to live, both in your career development and your personal life. You choose the path you want to take, the coach does all they can to help smooth the way forward for you. Remember your success is their success too.
Rather like a pilot landing a plane, you are the one in charge; a coach is the air traffic controller ensuring you make a safe landing!

The following questions are intended to help you focus on identifying your personal development goals –

1. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
2. If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be?
3. What would you most like to achieve through coaching?
4. If you could have anything you could wish for, what would it be?
a. Would you go ahead if your wish could be granted right now or would you have some anxieties and reservations?
b. If so, can you think why this might be?
5. What do you think the main strengths or skills needed to become the person you would like to be?
a. Make a list of these and divide the page into two columns headed: ‘How I am now’ and ‘How I would like to be’.

Once you have completed these questions, you will have several development goals. Coaching will help by encouraging your self-belief, building your confidence and finding ways to realise your true potential.
